Tabs or tablature are almost a taboo among the classical guitar community. Many consider it an inferior system that should be used only for popular music.
I think that it can be a very useful learning tool for classical guitarists. Tabs have helped me a lot in learning some pieces faster, I expanded my repertoire considerably thanks to them. It has some advantage over standard notation. For example:
- Its visual representation: A tab shows the fretboard and it is much easier to read at first glance than a staff.
- It is guitar specific: It is specifically designed for the instrument, and because of that it is easier to understand for guitarists than generic standard notation. This can also be a disadvantage, limiting your communication with other musicians. A violinist, for example, won't understand a guitar tab.
But I don't think that tabs should replace the standard notation system. They should complement each other. Here I put a picture of one of my tabs:

As you can see, it has both standard notation and tab. This is because tabs lack in some aspects, that should be fixed using standard notation. These cons are:
- Rhythmic information: This is the main disadvantage of tabs, they don't contain information about the duration of notes. That is fixed using standard notation as above, each note is represented both in the staff and as a number in the tab.
- Analytical information: Musical analysis is codified by recourse to standard musical notation. Standard scores enable musicians to utilise advanced tools for such analysis. These tools can't be applied using tabs. So, you shouldn't use tabs to study musical theory.
As a conclusion, I recommend using tabs for classical guitar, but after you have learnt to read standard notation and you know some theory. If you first learn using tabs, it would be harder for you to change to standard notation later.
